Frequently Asked Questions
What you can expect
What happens in an Osteopathy Consultation?
The initial consultation generally lasts about 45-60 minutes during which we complete a case history where we listen to you and ask questions about the reason you came to clinic, your general health, other medical care you are receiving or medication you are taking, and record this in your case notes. Anything discussed in session will always be confidential. We will then undertake a thorough physical examination. We will discuss with you what we have found, explain our proposed treatment plan, answer any questions or concerns you may have and if all is well, start treating immediately. We will also explain any benefits and risks of any treatments we are recommending. We will always ask your permission before attempting any treatment and we will never use any techniques that you are unhappy with.
How many Osteopathy sessions will I need?
This is entirely based on your individual needs and circumstances. Once we have done the initial consultation, we can give you a better idea.
Will I be sore after an Osteopathy session?
Some people are and some aren’t. Each person’s treatment is unique and everyone responds differently however we will always recommend ice packing or other hydrotherapy and stretches to help limit this should the need arise.
What happens during Shockwave Treatment?
Following a full consultation and case history, you will be positioned in a comfortable way which gives us access to your injury. We then select the appropriate gel pad to control the depth of the treatment and apply a water-based gel to your skin to help transmit the energy into your tissues.
What does Shockwave Treatment feel like?
Depending on what tissues we are on, you may experience anything from a toothache/pinching sensation to a replication of your symptoms. Discomfort usually settles within 20-40 seconds and can ebb and flow. You can help us by guiding us to your pain points as the Piezowave2 will replicate your pain when we are over the right point and at the right depth. There is little or no sensation on healthy tissues. Because we can control the intensity of the shockwave, we can increase it or decrease it so that it is always tolerable.
How many Shockwave treatments will I need?
This is very much subject to requirements, but generally a treatment programme may look like;
2500-6000 shocks per session at a frequency of 3-8 shocks per session, delivered every 3-7 days.
3-4 treatment sessions are usually adequate for most musculoskeletal conditions.
We will guide you through this and ensure you know what your treatment plan is with shockwave.
