Shockwave Treatment
Focused Shockwave Therapy
Here in clinic we offer Focused Shockwave which harnesses high energy sound waves, delivered precisely to your injury to activate your bodies tissue repair at a cellular level. Radial Shockwave is a different form of therapy using pressure waves and although the evidence is good, the strongest and best evidence is for Focused Shockwave.
Piezowave Shockwave Treatment
The Piezowave Shockwave System is increasingly used for professional athletes across football, athletics, and boxing. It has gradually filtered down into mainstream treatment as it decreases pain and reduces healing time, allowing athletes and the rest of us to rehabilitate much faster and get back to normality. The success rates are high, ranging from 65% to 91% and complication rates are low.
The applicator has precisely arranged piezo-electric crystals in a concave bowl which produce high-energy sound waves that focus to a shockwave at precise depths. This means that the energy is not bounced or reflected to create the focused energy, so you get the most consistent, comfortable, accurate, powerful and effective Shockwave treatment available.
Results
Often, positive results in chronic injuries are felt within 3 sessions.

Focused Shockwave
The technical bits
The Piezowave2 focused shockwaves reach their peak pressure precisely on the target tissue. This mechanical stimulus, known as Mechanotransduction, induces biochemical changes in living tissue which, on a molecular level affects gene expression and can promote cell growth, protein synthesis, release of growth factors, stimulation of stem cells and lubricin production.
This treatment can provide an anti-inflammatory, antibacterial effect whilst promoting microcirculation and metabolic activity. It is also proven to reduce the chemical substance in the tissues that induces pain, as well as reverse the growth of pain nerve receptors, meaning we can get rid of your pain, not mask it.
It is one of the few technologies that has been shown to effectively treat pain syndromes of the musculoskeletal system.
Focused shockwave technologies have the ability to adjust the depth, angle, and intensity of the focal area. Piezoelectric shockwave therapy is applied using multiple application pads (gel pads) which control the depth of the focal point and a coupling agent (water-based gel) to allow the shockwaves to travel to the tissues.

How effective is focused Shockwave?
Patients report an initial improvement almost immediately following treatment. Pain scores drop on average by 50% with many patients reporting pain disappearing completely in 1 session. This doesn’t mean that you are fixed though!
This reduction of pain is part of the process of helping your tissues heal without compromising other structures. It is a result of the analgesic effect resulting from hyperstimulation of the tissue. However, focused shockwave, has been shown to reduce pain physiologically by reducing the chemical substance in the tissues that induces pain and reversing the growth of pain nerve receptors. Our overall aim is to improve the efficiency of tissue regeneration and reproduction and manage pain throughout the healing process.
Often, positive results in chronic injuries are felt within an average of 3 sessions.
What can I expect to happen during a treatment?
Following a full consultation and case history, you will be positioned in a comfortable way which gives us access to your injury. We then select the appropriate gel pad to control the depth of the treatment and apply a water-based gel to your skin to help transmit the energy into your tissues.
What does it feel like?
Depending on what tissues we are on, you may experience anything from a toothache/pinching sensation to a replication of your symptoms. Discomfort usually settles within 20-40 seconds and can ebb and flow. You can help us by guiding us to your pain points as the Piezowave2 will replicate your pain when we are over the right point and at the right depth. There is little or no sensation on healthy tissues. Because we can control the intensity of the shockwave, we can increase it or decrease it so that it is always tolerable.
What is the duration of the process?
This very much depends on what you need but generally a treatment programme may look like;
2500-6000 shocks per session at a frequency of 3-8 shocks per session, delivered every 3-7 days.
3-4 treatment sessions are usually adequate for most musculoskeletal conditions.
We will guide you through this and ensure you know what your treatment plan is with shockwave.
